Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen is, quite simply, unlike anywhere else on earth. Founded in 1471 high in the Rif Mountains, the medina was painted blue across the centuries by its Andalusian and Jewish communities, and today every wall, every doorway, every fountain wears a hue of indigo, cobalt, or pale sky. Photographs cannot prepare you for the depth of it. From Tangier, the ascent is a two-hour mountain drive through cork forests and shepherd country — a landscape so different from coastal Morocco that travellers often describe it as a distinct kingdom. The medina is small, walkable, and best discovered slowly; our drivers position the car at the most discreet of the city's gates, brief you on the timing of golden hour at the Spanish Mosque viewpoint, and remain on call.
